Dream Vacation or Nightmare Trip? Handy Travel Tips for the Smart Traveler
Most times we're so excited about planning a vacation, getting the budget and itinerary right, ensuring that everyone is comfortable and fixing a thousand other travel details that we hardly spare a thought to safety and potential difficulties while we're far from home. Travel is interesting and exciting, but there may be hidden hazards that we're unaware of.
Here are some of the important things you can put on your To-do travel checklist:
Take vs Leave: Make a comprehensive list of what to take based on the number of days, the kind of weather, the things you plan to do and absolute essentials. Some airlines and countries have regulations about size/dimensions of luggage. Travel as light as possible. Mix'n'match clothes are ideal, never wear new shoes on vacation. Leave your valuables behind and don't display expensive jewelry/cameras/phones. Take sufficient medications in their original packing, with a doctor's prescription. Carry traveler's checks and credit cards rather than cash.
Scan & Copy: Scan and Copy your travel documents, health reports, insurance papers, tickets, driver's license, passport, etc. and keep them in a safe place in your bags. Write down your address/phone no and paste them on your luggage where they can't be noticed by casual passers-by. Write down your credit card numbers and the helpline number of your service provider.
Research: Research your destination thoroughly before you go. Local customs, holidays, cuisine, traditions, etc. may be different from yours. There's nothing like arriving in a place to discover that it's the weekly holiday for museums/monuments. Dress and behave appropriately without causing offense to locals. Research local medical facilities.
Adventure: If you've planned an adventure/sporting holiday, make sure you do your homework. You need the right kind of gear, clothes, footwear, safety accessories etc. Some destinations may offer hiring/rental but carrying your own is preferable. For instance, if you're planning to enjoy a waterfall or water-sports, make sure you have an extra change of clothes, towels and the right footwear.
Street-smart: Never risk walking through lonely, poorly-lit alleys/streets at night. Don't get involved in local issues, purchase "antiques" and avoid unnecessary contact with strangers. Pick-pockets, vagrants, scamsters and sexual predators are a hazard in every country. Use public transport, but be wary of people who strike up conversations, offer refreshments, great deals etc.
Click-smart: Never take pictures of people without their permission, and don't flaunt your fancy photographic equipment.
Lone Rangers: Lone Rangers should be wary of unsolicited friendships and never succumb to pressure to do/eat/drink/buy anything you don't want to.
Travel is a great way to broaden your horizons, get out of your comfort zone, experience a new culture, cuisine, customs and explore a part of the world that's different from your own. Keep these tips in mind and have a delightful, safe holiday!
While visiting a destination that has waterfalls, ensure that you research the place thoroughly. Dress, footwear, safety accessories etc should be suitable and never venture to the location while under the influence of alcohol. For more information, visit: http://www.dunnsriverfallsjm.com/
